ABOUT TEMPLE HOTEL

About the temple lodging

Shorekiji is a temple lodging that bills itself as the "world's first temple auberge," available for exclusive rental by one group per day.

With the concept of a temple lodging that "calms the mind," head priest Hironobu Tamagawa acts as a dedicated concierge, proposing a customized stay from approximately 20 types of temple experiences, tailored to the guest's purpose and state of mind. A distinctive feature is the meal, which involves preparing an entire rare gamecock from the local Hasugamine farm, prompting reflection on taking a life. Shorekiji was selected for the Japan Tourism Agency's "Castle Stay / Temple Stay" project in 2020 and grand opened on June 1, 2021.

History of the temple

Shorekiji's history began in 942, when Kuya Shonin carved and enshrined a statue of Kannon. In 991, Emperor Ichijo is said to have bestowed the temple name "Shoryaku" (the era name at the time) in recognition of the temple's efficacy in prayers for rain. Successive lords of the Ayabe domain also devoutly protected the temple as their prayer temple. Many of the current main hall, gate, priest's quarters, and guardian deity hall were built by Tanshin Shonin approximately 190 years ago.

The temple grounds, overlooking the Yura River and surrounded by mountains, feature a 600-year-old zelkova tree. In the bamboo forest behind the temple, you can harvest bamboo shoots, shiitake mushrooms, yuzu, sansho pepper, plums, quince, and persimmons. At night, you can enjoy a sky full of stars.

Since autumn 2018, the chief priest has been hand-writing Goshuin (temple seals) using local Kurotani Washi paper. Mail order is also available, with a wide variety of seals ranging from premium Goshuin to seasonal limited editions.
