ABOUT TEMPLE HOTEL

About temple lodging

Habanobo, written as “the temple at the edge,” is literally located on the eastern edge of Mt. Minobu. “Hashi” (edge) also means “beginning,” making this a place of new starts. The temple grounds, situated on high ground, offer excellent views, including Mt. Takatori directly ahead and Mt. Shichimen, which is unique among the temple lodgings on the mountain. It's a peaceful environment, just a 5-minute walk to Kuonji Temple.

Based on the concept of “Sanro-rashiku” (viewing time spent at the temple lodging as a form of spiritual training), there are no luxuries like TVs in the rooms or even in the lobby. During the evening service, which guests are invited to attend, there is a special opening of the altar and a dharma talk. Meals are shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), prepared without any animal products, even in the broth. The head priest will guide guests to the morning service held early at the head temple, Kuonji.

Temple history

Habanobo is a temple founded by Shijo Kingo Yorimoto, a samurai from the Kamakura period and the personal physician to Saint Nichiren. It began in 1280 (Kōan 3) when he built a hermitage to serve Saint Nichiren closely, making it one of the oldest and most historic sub-temples of Mount Minobu today. In 1874, it merged with Shinjobo, and although it suffered a fire in 1877, it was rebuilt in the same year. The current main hall (Shijo-den) was reconstructed in 1990.

The hall enshrines Saint Nichiren, the principal image of Shichimen Daimyojin, and Shijo Kingo Yorimoto and his wife. As Yorimoto was a physician, it is believed that the temple offers blessings for recovery from illness. The temple gate is also a yakui-mon, a style often used for the homes of physicians in the past. While many temples on Mount Minobu have relocated or merged over time, Habanobo has no record of relocation and has preserved its original location, continuing its dharma lamp for 50 generations to this day.

Yorimoto was one of Saint Nichiren's four great patrons. During the Tatsunokuchi Persecution, he was prepared to die with the saint, and it is said that he crossed the sea himself to visit Saint Nichiren during his exile to Sado. He was also skilled in medicine, earning Saint Nichiren's complete trust, who said, "I entrust everything concerning my body to you and will use no other medicine."
