ABOUT TEMPLE HOTEL

About the temple lodging

Matsuryuzan Shodenji (commonly known as "Shodenji," Nichiren sect) is a temple in Shiba, Tokyo, with a history of approximately 400 years.

Shodenji renovated its kuri (temple living quarters) adjacent to the main hall within the temple grounds into accommodation for the general public, opening as a temple lodging in July 2019. The temple's wish to "open the temple to more people and encourage them to visit" has begun in the form of a temple lodging.

History of the temple

Shodenji was originally a hermitage where the 107th Emperor spent his later years, founded in 1602. Later, this hermitage became the Edo branch office of the Nichiren sect, one of the major schools of Japanese Buddhism, and was formally established as a temple under its current name, Matsuryuzan Shodenji.

The guardian deity of Shodenji is Bishamontenno. After receiving one of the Nichiren sect's revered Bishamontenno statues from a high-ranking priest of the sect, Shodenji became known as one of the "Three Great Bishamon of Edo" and attracted the faith of many common people. The "Edo Meisho Zue" from the 1830s depicts commoners visiting Shodenji on "Tiger Days," believed to bring good fortune.

The guardian beasts protecting the Bishamondo are not komainu (lion-dogs), but tigers. The goshuin (temple seal) features an image of Bishamonten.
