ABOUT TEMPLE HOTEL

About the temple lodging

Enmyozan Daikeiji (Nichiren sect) is a temple founded over 770 years ago, located in the heart of Fujieda-shuku, the 22nd post town on the old Tokaido road. In the spring of 1253, Nichiren Shonin stopped here on his way to study at Mt. Hiei. He taught a couple, Doen and Myoen, who ran a teahouse, and planted a pine tree as a memento. This tree is known as the "Kuon-no-Matsu" (Pine of Eternity).

During the Edo period, it became a prayer temple for Tanaka Castle and was known as "Samurai Temple." Kanshozo, a private temple lodging that opened in June 2026, offers views of this very pine tree.

Temple history

The Kuon-no-Matsu is a 770-year-old Japanese black pine. It stands 26m tall, with branches spanning 30m, and a base circumference of 7m. It is among the oldest pines and a rare giant tree in Japan. It is designated a Natural Monument by Shizuoka Prefecture, selected as one of the "100 Famous Pines of Japan" (1983), and recognized as a cultural property constituting a Japan Heritage site (certified June 2020).

In front of the pine stands a stone-carved Great Pagoda, beneath which are the graves of the monks Doen and Myoen. These graves are authenticated as dating from the Kamakura period, and the temple's mountain name, "Enmyozan," is derived from their Buddhist names.

During the Edo period, the temple served as a prayer sanctuary for Tanaka Castle (45,000 koku). Records show that the head priest at the time was commended for successfully praying for the recovery of a princess's illness, receiving such preferential treatment that he was permitted to ride in a palanquin equal to that of the castle lord.
