This UNESCO World Heritage site buzzes with energy and charm, making me eager to return. Nachikatsuura is a hidden gem where culture and adventure seamlessly blend!

Nachikatsuura is an incredible place to live and work as a digital nomad. Mornings started with hikes along the sacred Kumano Kodo, walking trails that take you through an ancient Japan. Massive trees, towering waterfalls, and wooden temples set in peaceful grounds made it easy to disconnect from the modern world before getting to work. The town itself is dense and walkable, with a beach right in the middle. It’s easy to explore day or night, with welcoming cafés, izakayas, and small restaurants serving the freshest local seafood. The entire region is stunning—lush green mountains stretch across deep valleys, rivers and streams carve through the landscape, and the coastline is marked by black volcanic rock rising from crystal-clear water. Wildlife is everywhere, from deer in the forests to wild birds overhead.
Afternoons were productive, whether working with ocean views or in a quiet spot in town. Before dinner, the best way to unwind was a trip to the outdoor onsens overlooking the sea. Evenings were spent going out for great food and drinks or sitting by the water, watching the sky shift colors as night fell. The local community is welcoming, with creative entrepreneurs and business owners who make it easy to feel at home.
Between the stunning scenery, the relaxed but productive atmosphere, and the quality of life, Nachikatsuura is the kind of place that proves you don’t have to choose between work and adventure—you can have both. I’ll be back.
