Can restoring old temples create new travel experiences?
This question is at the center of our collaboration with PlanetDAO.
PlanetDAO is a community-powered project that raises funds from people around the world to restore abandoned historical buildings in Japan. The goal is to protect these sites and bring them back into use in a respectful and sustainable way.
These restored buildings become places where people can stay, take part in local activities, and connect with the culture of the area.
A 170-year-old temple in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama
Right now, PlanetDAO is renovating a 170-year-old temple in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama.
Once the renovation is complete, OTERA STAY will operate the temple as a unique lodging experience. Guests will be able to stay inside a real historical building while spending time in nature and the local community.
Planned activities include:
・Forest bathing and open-air baths
・Rice field work with local residents
・Marine activities along the nearby coast

Existing experiences at Daitaiji Temple
While visiting Nachikatsuura, guests can also stay at Daitaiji Temple, where OTERA STAY already offers:
・Meditation sessions
・Cultural programs
・A quiet, remote work–friendly environment
How this project works
The project follows a clear process:
・PlanetDAO identifies abandoned historical buildings
・Funds are raised globally through a community-based DAO model
・Renovation is carried out with local architects and craftspeople
・OTERA STAY operates the site and welcomes guests from around the world
Why this matters
Projects like this help preserve cultural heritage while creating meaningful travel experiences. They support local communities and give old buildings a new role in modern life.
This approach focuses on long-term value, not short-term tourism. The goal is to protect these places so they can be experienced and cared for for generations to come.
