Shodenji Temple
Shodenji Temple is a hermitage built in 1602 where the XNUMXth Emperor spent his final years.
Originating later, this hermitage is one of the major sects among the 13 sects of Japanese Buddhism.
It became the Edo branch office of the Nichiren sect, and its name is still used today as ``Matsunagareyama Shodenji''.
It has officially become a temple.
The guardian deity of Shodenji Temple is Bishamon Tenno.
In the first place, Bishamonten is one of the gods who protects Buddhism.
He is one of the ``Four Heavenly Kings'' gods, said to be the strongest.
Although Bishamonten was originally an Indian god,
He was a god so popular among the common people that he became one of the "Seven Lucky Gods", a religion unique to Japan.
It was worshiped by people as a god with many blessings.
Edo Meisho Zue
This is the ``Edo Meisho Zue'' that depicts famous places in Edo and the lives of common people in the 1830s.
This illustration also describes the bustle of Shodenji at the time.The illustration depicts common people visiting Shodenji Temple on ``The Day of the Tiger'' in the old calendar, which brings good luck.
At Shoden-ji Temple, opening ceremonies and prayers are still held at Bishamon-do on the first day of the tiger in New Year, May, and September.
Goshuin Stamp
Bishamonten is depicted on the goshuin of Shodenji Temple.
Here at Shoden-ji Temple, a high priest of the Nichiren sect gave one of the sect's venerable statues of King Bishamon.
For this reason, Shodenji Temple was counted as one of the ``Three Great Bishamon Temples of Edo'' and attracted the faith of many common people.
King Bishamonten was deeply revered as the ``god of victory and luck'' by the famous military commanders of the Sengoku period.After the end of the Sengoku period and the beginning of the Edo period, it came to be worshiped as a god of good fortune that would improve business prosperity and financial fortune.
